　　1. mass常作可數(shù)名詞，意為“團(tuán)；塊；堆”；用作不可數(shù)名詞，指物理術(shù)語中的“質(zhì)量”。如：
　　A mass of rock had fallen from the cliff and now blocked the road.
　　一大塊巖石從懸崖上掉了下來，堵塞了道路。
　　A liter of gas has less mass than a liter of water.
　　一升汽油的質(zhì)量比一升水的質(zhì)量小。
　　2. a mass of (也可用masses of)表示“大量；大批”，既可修飾可數(shù)名詞，也可修飾不可數(shù)名詞。如：
　　I’ve masses of work to do.
　　我有許多的工作要做。
　　There were a mass of children in the yard. 院子里有一大群孩子。
　　3. the mass表示“大部分；主要部分”，�？山觨f短語。如：
　　The mass of public opinion is in favor of the new foreign policy.
　　大部分的輿論擁護(hù)新的外交政策。
　　4. the masses 表示“大眾；民眾”。如：
　　I wonder if they are truly concerned with the interests of the masses.
　　我不知道他們是否真正關(guān)心民眾的利益。
　　5. 另外，mass還可用作形容詞(無比較等級(jí))，意為“大眾的；民眾的”或“大量的；大規(guī)模的；大批的”或“整個(gè)的；全部的”；也可作動(dòng)詞，
　　意為“聚集起來；集中；聚集”。如：
　　the mass media 大眾媒體
　　Mass education is essential in promoting democracy.
　　民眾教育對(duì)提倡民主是非常重要的。
　　We want to promote literacy on a mass scale.
　　我們要大規(guī)模地提高文化水平。
　　Dark clouds massed and we expected rain. 烏云密布,看起來就要下雨了。
