In 1944 a 22-year-old Army medic(衛(wèi)生兵) was answering a battle-field cry for help when fragments of an exploding German shell tore into him."Gee doc,I feel like both my arms were blown off,"George Lott told his battalion´s surgeon as he staffered into a first-aid station (急救站) near the front in northeastern France. It was the beginning of a painful 5000 mile journey through three hospitals as doctor tried to save the medic´s life.
