　　Does palmistry have any basis in science? A connection has been made between the lines on the hand and some genetic traits, as well as between heart disease and certain fingerprint patterns. Whether palm reading can foretell the future, however, is a question science seems unable to answer.

　　The clearest indicators of the future are the main lines of the palm, although opinions vary on what they represent. To a Chinese fortune-teller, the Life Line, which arcs downwards from the thumb side of the palm to the wrist, is an indicator of life span. Western palmists, however, think this line is more likely to signify quality of life.
