一般過去時(shí)，過去進(jìn)行時(shí)，過去完成時(shí)，過去完成進(jìn)行時(shí)（很少用），文法上統(tǒng)稱為“Past tenses（過去的時(shí)態(tài)）”。這些過去的時(shí)態(tài)常會(huì)引起中國學(xué)生學(xué)習(xí)上的混淆。關(guān)于這一點(diǎn)，各位可以盡量學(xué)習(xí)使用一般過去時(shí)來表達(dá)，遇有必要清楚交待過去進(jìn)行時(shí)或過去完成時(shí)時(shí)才使用各該時(shí)態(tài)。請仔細(xì)觀察下面短文的各動(dòng)詞的時(shí)態(tài)以及彼此之間的時(shí)間關(guān)系就會(huì)明白盡量使用一般過去時(shí)的道理。

One day a duck and a hen （A） took a walk together. （1） They were looking for something to eat.

Soon the duck said, “ I see something to eat. It looks like wheat!” “Let's run and get it,” said the hen.

Then they both （B） ran.

But the hen could run faster than the duck, so （2） she ate up all the wheat before the duck got there.

The duck and the hen （C） walked on again. Now the duck was hungry and tired. Soon they （D） came to a brook.

“Look,” called the hen.“See the corn on the other side of the brook. Let's get it!”

（ 3 ） The duck jumped into the water and was soon on the other side of the brook. Then she （E） began to eat the corn.

The hen called, “That is my corn. I saw it first! Bring the corn to me!”

“Come and get it, ” （F） cried the duck. And she never （G） stopped eating the corn.

動(dòng)詞由（A）~（G），時(shí)間上很明顯都有先后的次序，但是因?yàn)槎际沁^去的事，所以統(tǒng)統(tǒng)使用一般過去時(shí)就好，假定我們對這些過去的各動(dòng)作，一一就各動(dòng)作進(jìn)行先后發(fā)生來處理，那就沒完沒了，話也說不下去了，文章也寫不下去了。因此凡是過去的事，過去的動(dòng)作，最重要的大原則就是使用一般過去時(shí)來表達(dá)。

（1）的“They were looking for …”，是這一只鴨與母雞“took a walk together”的目的，也是這篇故事的重點(diǎn)，所以該用過去進(jìn)行時(shí)的就用了過去進(jìn)行時(shí)。

（2）的“she ate up …before… got there，”按文法理論“ate up”應(yīng)該先于“ got there”，所以使用“had eaten up”才合理，但是這種先后關(guān)系并不是“不以時(shí)態(tài)表達(dá)就會(huì)產(chǎn)生混淆”，因此英、美人無論是在談話中或?qū)懽魃隙純A向于使用一般過去時(shí)來表達(dá)。如（3）的“ jumped into…and… was ”也是，用一般過去時(shí)來表達(dá)就很清楚了。
