　　Dear Senior School Parents and Families,

　　親愛的家長們，

　　As we complete the first half of the first semester, we review how students are progressing and reflect on what the students have accomplished. With a tailored syllabus for each English level, we need to continuously focus on their needs and how their English supports their other subjects, especially for the VCE. Basic structured classes ‘I do’, ‘We do’ and ‘You do’ are at the forefront of our methodology. We have produced a 200 page general vocabulary workbook, which all teachers use at the A1, A2 and B1 levels to support their teaching. 

　　在我們完成學(xué)期的前半部分之際，我們回顧了學(xué)生如何進(jìn)步，并就學(xué)生已經(jīng)取得的進(jìn)步和成績進(jìn)行總結(jié)。每個英語水平都有專門的教學(xué)大綱，我們需要繼續(xù)關(guān)注學(xué)生的需求以及他們的英語如何支持其他學(xué)科的學(xué)習(xí)，特別是VCE課程。而貫穿課堂教學(xué)基本結(jié)構(gòu)的“我做”(老師示范)、“我們做”(老師和學(xué)生一起做練習(xí))和“你做”(學(xué)生自行操練)在我們的方法論中是最前沿的。另外，我們?yōu)閷W(xué)生們制作了200頁的常用單詞詞匯手冊，所有教授A1、A2和B1水平的教師都在使用該手冊用以支持他們的教學(xué)。

　　For year 10, A1+ level students – 13 classes of intensive Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, Grammar and Vocabulary, teachers focus on the students ‘natural’ acquisition of the English language where students are taught structures in grammar starting at the basic level, backed up with vocabulary to support the writing, speaking, listening and reading.

　　對于10年級的A1+水平的學(xué)生來說——我們一周有13節(jié)課時緊鑼密鼓地進(jìn)行精讀、寫作、聽力、口語、語法和詞匯等的教學(xué)和練習(xí)，教師關(guān)注學(xué)生對英語的自然習(xí)得，并基于此，從基本水平開始講語法結(jié)構(gòu)，用詞匯支持學(xué)生的寫作、口語、聽力和閱讀。

　　Brief description of the focus of the year 10, 5 + 5 + 3 Classes:

　　In the ‘Writing & Speaking’ classes, students learn how to write descriptive paragraphs structured with a topic sentence, supporting details and a conclusion. They also practice describing one of their peers, where other students have to guess who he or she is according to the information they are given. All students really enjoy these types of classes especially as it engages their senses and all learning skills. Using adjectives to describe people, students are encouraged to think and analyse for themselves and one way to begin is by sharing their own experiences.

　　在“寫作與口語”課上，學(xué)生學(xué)習(xí)如何運(yùn)用主題句、支撐句和結(jié)論句來進(jìn)行描述性段落的寫作。他們還練習(xí)描述他們的同齡人，其他學(xué)生必須根據(jù)他們給出的信息猜測他/她是誰。所有的學(xué)生都非常喜歡這種類型的課程，尤其是跟他們的想法和學(xué)習(xí)到的技巧有關(guān)的時候。另外，在用形容詞來描述一個人，并鼓勵學(xué)生自己進(jìn)行思考和分析這個方面，教師通過讓學(xué)生分享他們自己的經(jīng)歷來達(dá)到這一目標(biāo)。

　　For year 11, over 45% of the students (B1+ and B2- students) are focusing on IELTS preparation at the 5.0 – 6.5 level. In addition, they are also taking academic vocabulary classes to support their future academic requirements.

　　對于11年級來說，45%以上的學(xué)生(B1+和B2-水平的學(xué)生)專注于雅思5到6.5水平的學(xué)習(xí)。此外，他們還有學(xué)術(shù)詞匯課，以支持他們在以后的學(xué)術(shù)學(xué)習(xí)。

　　At year 11 B1 and B1+ level, students have been concentrating on describing personal qualities – both positive and negative. As we know, using adjectives can add significantly to general and academic writing and supporting the word building and word formation which is vital in all B1+ and above classes. Students have been spending time describing people they know (friends, family, famous people, etc.). Not only have they been using their newly acquired vocabulary but giving reasons for their choices. Overall, this gives their writing much added depth and encourages students to think critically. Some students are working on a ‘how to’ essay topic of their choice using the appropriate text type. By choosing their own topics, students are able to take some ownership of their learning and explore the vocabulary of topics they have an interest in. ‘How to’ paragraphs are a very common text type which will serve students well in their future studies.

　　對于11年級B1和B1+水平的學(xué)生來說，他們集中進(jìn)行了在個人素質(zhì)方面的描述--包括正面和負(fù)面的寫作練習(xí)。眾所周知，使用形容詞可以大大提高學(xué)術(shù)寫作的質(zhì)量，并有助于增加詞匯儲備，這對所有B1+及以上水平的課程都是至關(guān)重要的。學(xué)生在描述他們認(rèn)識的人(朋友、家人、名人等)方面進(jìn)行了練習(xí)。他們不僅使用了新學(xué)習(xí)的詞匯，而且能夠?qū)ψ约旱倪x擇給予合理的解釋。總的來說，這加深了他們寫作的深度，同時在教學(xué)中我們提倡學(xué)生進(jìn)行批判性的思考。另外，學(xué)生學(xué)會了使用合適的文體類型來研究如何選擇文章題目。學(xué)生通過選擇自己感興趣的主題，擁有了學(xué)習(xí)自主權(quán)，并探索相關(guān)主題的詞匯。“如何做”是一種非常常見的文體類型，它將為學(xué)生將來的學(xué)習(xí)打下良好的基礎(chǔ)。

　　Some year 11 students have also been working very intensively on their ‘Speaking and Writing’ projects in preparation for their powerpoint presentations which will be formally assessed at the end of November. The main focus of the work has been on introducing students to the skills required 1) when researching a topic and 2) to the speaking and writing skills required when making presentations. The main objective of this exercise is to prepare students for real life situations in both their academic and professional lives in the future.

　　In addition in year 11, the 5 + 3 intensive grammar and vocabulary classes focus has been on the future by using ‘be going to’, ‘will’ and the ‘present continuous’ using ‘ing’ and the past using regular verbs ‘ed’. For preparation students also share among their peers with ‘fears’ one topic which is important for building confidence and being able to think critically and analyse through self-awareness.

　　此外，對于11年級的學(xué)生來說，5+3模式的強(qiáng)化語法和詞匯課主要集中于將來時時態(tài)的學(xué)習(xí)和練習(xí)，并能正確使用“be going to”、“will”和“be doing”表示將來時，規(guī)則動詞在詞尾加“ed”等。同時，學(xué)生還與同齡人分享“恐懼”這一話題，這對于建立自信、通過自我意識進(jìn)行批判性思維的思考和分析很重要。

　　The ESL programme continues to focus on the needs of each student at their level and to challenge them appropriately. The focus and support to the students in each class is, either the teacher is addressing the ‘whole class’, a group of students or an individual student’. Group work and pair work are fundamental in second language learning and all ESL teachers are trained and experienced in this method.

　　英語項(xiàng)目組持續(xù)關(guān)注每個等級學(xué)生的英語需求。我們減少了班級學(xué)生人數(shù)，并且還會有兩名新老師的加入。這樣做的目的是，通過小班教學(xué)，使得老師能夠更有效地幫助到學(xué)生，并為他們提供有針對性的指導(dǎo)。

　　All ESL classroom teachers follow Haileybury’s strict teaching guidelines of ‘I do, We do and You do.’

　　每一位英語老師都堅(jiān)持著黑利伯瑞固有的教學(xué)模式，以便為學(xué)生們提供各種有效的學(xué)習(xí)方法。在第二語言習(xí)得的過程中，小組學(xué)習(xí)和同伴學(xué)習(xí)是最有效的途徑，每一位老師都會在課堂中使用此類方法。
